Session Preparation Guide

Family • Couples • Senior Portraits

You’re officially booked—now let’s get you fully prepared! A little planning before your session goes a long way in creating beautiful, cohesive images that feel natural and timeless. These tips will help your session feel relaxed and ensure your photos truly shine.

Coordinating Outfits & Colors

Outfit coordination is one of the most important elements of a successful session. Rather than matching exactly, aim to coordinate colors and textures that complement each other and the environment we’re photographing in.

Tips for choosing outfits:

  • Stick to neutral tones with a few soft accent colors
  • Earth tones, muted pastels, denim, creams, tans, soft blues, and sage photograph beautifully
  • Avoid bold logos, graphics, or neon colors
  • Mix textures (knits, denim, linen) for added visual interest
  • Choose outfits that allow movement and feel comfortable

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you plan outfits ahead of time!

Dressing for the Environment & Season

Whether we’re photographing outdoors or indoors, your outfits should complement the location and season.

  • Outdoor sessions: Flowy fabrics, layers, and natural colors work best
  • Fall/Winter: Cozy textures, boots, scarves, jackets, and warm tones
  • Spring/Summer: Light fabrics, soft colors, and breathable materials

Comfort is key—especially for families and seniors—so choose pieces you can move and sit in easily.

Family Session Tips

  • Coordinate colors across the family without everyone wearing the same thing
  • Dress children in outfits that allow them to move freely
  • Bring a favorite small toy or comfort item if needed
  • Relax and have fun—genuine moments make the best images
